ACTION REPORT
February 2007
ACTS 2008 Winter Edition

Dear Friends of ACTS,

Not too long ago, I was at a restaurant and met a couple who have been long-time supporters of ACTS. The conversation turned to our last Silent Auction fundraiser and what a good time they had. They said they come every year, even though they don’t really need anything. The wife had been following an item, upping the bid against another woman who was also interested. In the end the wife won and went to pay for the item. She met her fellow bidder and offered to give her the item if she really wanted it. After some conversation the item changed hands. During that conversation, both women found out that they had a common personal experience of dealing with cancer. Reflecting on this encounter, it made me realize that building relationships is important and all of us can connect on some level with another person. We can always find common ground. Our loyal friends know this and I believe that is why they support the ACTS mission. Even though they don’t know the person or family they help, they know there is a bond. That is why I am committed to this organization.

It is an honor to follow in the footsteps of the former executive directors and I would like to thank the Board of Directors for this new opportunity to continue my connection to ACTS as the new executive director. Our mission to end hunger, homelessness, domestic violence and the suffering of our neighbors in the Prince William area is noble. It is one that supporters of ACTS have been committed to since 1969. We have grown over the years as the county has grown, and we know that working together
is the only way to make headway against these problems. It takes a collaborated effort with our elected officials, other nonprofit's, the private sector and our faith community. I am an optimist and know we can create an environment that allows the poor and suffering a dignified place in our community.

During my three and a half years as the Emergency Assistance Program Director, I have met many people who are struggling to meet the basic needs of life. It takes a strength of spirit to continue that struggle day in and day out. I’ve seen the breathing space that caring staff, volunteers, our faith partners, and other supporters can provide. Sometimes that is all that is needed and other times it gives people enough sustenance to continue until the next time they need our resources. They need to know someone cares.

I am excited about the future for ACTS and look forward to collaborating with the dedicated staff, volunteers and friends. For me, this is an appropriate start to a new year and I wish all of you many blessings in 2008.
